Ujjain Violence: Student Leaders Surrender
Bhopal -- Three student leaders Wednesday afternoon surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh police in Ujjain in connection with a case of arson and violence though no arrests were made for a teacher's murder in the clashes Saturday.
"The ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) activists, state secretary Vimal Tomar, state president Shashi Ranjan Akela and one Bhanu Singh, have surrendered before the police in the case of arson and violence at the Madhav College," Ujjain Superintendent of Police Jaydeep Singh said.
"Two dozen activists of the NSUI (National Student Union of India) have also courted arrest to protest the rounding up of some Congress workers in the above case," Singh added.
In the clashes at the Madhav College Saturday, several student leaders, angry at the cancellation of the students' union polls, had allegedly attacked H.S. Sabharval, who later died in the hospital.
The NSUI, the students' wing of the opposition Congress, has alleged that the activists of the ABVP, the students' body affiliated to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), were responsible for the professor's death.
While police have registered a case of murder, no arrests have been made so far.
The college principal had named some students in a memorandum submitted to the police Tuesday accusing them of ransacking the furniture during college elections.
In another development, the teachers of the college also submitted a memorandum to the district administration Wednesday naming seven students responsible for the attack on Sabharwal.
The tragedy at Ujjain, 190 km from here, has provoked widespread protests.
In Bhopal, hundreds of Congress workers staged a demonstration in front of the chief minister's residence Wednesday and called for a statewide shutdown Sep 5 - the Teacher's Day. They demanded a ban on the ABVP.
The Congress also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident, a compensation of Rs.1 million to Sabharwal's family and Rs.50,000 each to the two other professors who were injured in the clash.
The Madhya Pradesh government late Tuesday asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police to probe the matter.
